Every year on September 14, Hindi Diwas, also known as National Hindi Day, is observed to honour the language’s official status in India and to promote awareness of Hindi. Schools, universities, and workplaces commemorate the day with essay-writing contests and other events. Globally, people commemorate World Hindi Diwas Day, or Vishwa Hindi Diwas, on January 10. Hindi is the third most spoken language in the world and has made major literary and nationalistic achievements. On January 10, we celebrate Vishwa Hindi Diwas, also known as World Hindi Day, to pay tribute to those who speak Hindi, raise awareness of the language among the next generation, and recognise its value.

Date of Hindi Diwas 2024

To give Hindi a prominent position in the linguistic landscape, the Constituent Assembly of India declared Hindi to be the official language of the Republic of India on September 14, 1949. Hindi Diwas is observed to honour the country’s cultural and historical importance. For UPSC students, knowing the rationale behind the celebration will help them gain insight into India’s language regulations and constitutional provisions—two important subjects included in the civil services exam.

History Behind the Hindi Day Celebration

  • Every year on September 14, Hindi Diwas, also known as National Hindi Day, is observed to commemorate the Constituent Assembly of India’s 1949 decision to make Hindi the official language of the country.
  • On January 26, 1950, the Indian Constitution made the adoption of Hindi lawful. The first prime minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru, chose this day to observe Hindi Diwas. The language and its rich cultural legacy are promoted through events and activities organised by the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • Speech contests, programs, language lessons, and special activities at schools and universities are all part of Vishwa Hindi Divas. Events are also hosted by Indian embassies to commemorate the day. Ever since January 10 has been observed as World Hindi Day or Vishwa Hindi Diwas.
  • Hindi was designated as the national language of India in 1949 by the Constituent Assembly, marking the beginning of Hindi Diwas 2024. Promoting national unity and linguistic standardisation were the main goals. To raise awareness and educate the next generation about Hindi, it is crucial to keep the date in mind and celebrate Hindi Diwas on the same day.

Significance of Hindi Day

On World Hindi Day, Hindi, the official language of the Union of India and the Indian government is commemorated by highlighting its importance in a variety of contexts, including speeches, performances, music, and theatre arts. The beauty and diversity of the language should be recognised since it is vital to the global cultural and linguistic environment. In addition to commemorating Hindi’s status as an official language, Hindi Diwas 2024 aims to promote cultural heritage and acknowledge the language’s influence in forming India’s identity. It promotes peace and harmony among India’s many language-speaking people.

More about the Hindi Language

Hindi, which is Persian in origin, was cited as the mother tongue by 43.6% of Indians in 2011. The eleventh century saw the creation of the Devanagari script. Every year on January 10, Hindi, the fifth most spoken language in the world, is honoured. Spoken in Guyana, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, South Africa, Germany, New Zealand, Uganda, Suriname, Trinidad, and Mauritius, among other places. The evolution of Hindi is described in Article 351 of the Indian Constitution.
