History of World Bamboo Day

  • World Bamboo Day was founded by Kamesh Salam in 2009 to advocate for the sustainable use of bamboo as a resource and to increase public knowledge of its economic and environmental advantages.
  • On September 18, in conjunction with the 8th World Bamboo Congress in Bangkok, Thailand, the day was formally recognised. The purpose of the event was to support new bamboo farming for rising global businesses while also protecting natural resources.
  • The World Bamboo Organisation (WBO) decided to designate September 18th as World Bamboo Day, and delegates from around 100 nations concurred.
  • The day aims to raise public awareness of bamboo’s importance in growing sectors and its financial benefits. For extra historical importance, the day coincides with Royal Thai Forestry Day.
  • The purpose of the celebration is to draw attention to the possibilities of bamboo in the fields of agriculture, crafts, and building. Bamboo is a highly adaptable and environmentally sustainable material that grows and regenerates swiftly, making it a vital resource for sustainable development.
  • Since its founding, September 18th has been set aside as World Bamboo Day every year. To honour and promote bamboo, numerous celebrations and activities are planned all over the world.
